Grand chance for poets

NORTHUMBERLAND residents are being urged to get their creative juices flowing for a national poetry competition.

The annual United Press contest is looking for people of all ages to send in a poem about life in their own home town or area and the winning entry will win £1,000 in cash.

Previous winning compositions have been about village life, a river, a tower, a country walk and local history.

A United Press spokesman said: “The competition is designed to encourage more people to get involved in writing poetry. Your entry can be about something or someone from your home area.

“We find that poems written from personal observation and experience are the most heartfelt and expressive, so we’re expecting some great entries from Northumberland.”

It is free to take part and poets can send up to three works, which must be no more than 25 lines and 160 words each.

Send entries to Local Poem, United Press Ltd, Admail 3735, London, EC1B 1JB. The closing date is December 31.

For more information about the competition, call 0844 8009177 or visit www.unitedpress.co.uk
