CHARITIES and community groups across Northumberland have been celebrating a bumper pay day.

Morpeth Lions Club has distributed around £7,000 to 40 organisations throughout the area.

The bulk of the cash came from the annual Dickens of a Draw event, which sees the Lions organise prizes and give groups tickets to sell. The organisations then receive all of the money they generate.

This year, around £4,700 was collected between the groups, which was handed back to them at a Lions meeting.

In addition, the club approved payments of £2,300 to a further 14 organisations, including the Great North Air Ambulance, Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Northumberland Samaritans, Morpeth RNLI, Northumberland County Blind Association and the Toby Henderson Trust, as well as various sight initiatives.

Lions member Mike Nicholson was thanked for organising the draw.
