Hallowe’en frights at county haunt
HISTORY and Hallowe’en will go hand in hand at a Northumberland museum.
Woodhorn Museum and Northumberland Archives is offering a range of activities, starting this weekend.
The Northumberland History Fair on Sunday is the perfect place to start for those interested in tracing their family tree, investigating the history of their home, researching a local historical figure or looking into the roots of a community, with experts at hand to help.
A number of local groups will attend the event, including Northumberland and Durham Family History Society, the Mining Institute, North East War Memorials Project and the Clan Johnstone Association.
And staff from the archives will offer advice.
Writer Barbara Henderson will talk about the courses she offers to help people put their research into a readable format and artist-in-residence Clare Money will hold an open studio event.
There will also be the chance to look at the Woodhorn collections in a behind-the-scenes tour by librarian Anne Newbury.
Surplus local history books will be on sale and there will be craft demonstrations from Wansbeck Matters and The Travelling Spinners.
Event organiser Liz Ritson said: “This is the third time we’ve held the fair at Woodhorn and it’s a really useful way of getting in touch with other people who share a passion for local and family history.
“Individuals and organisations are always very happy to share their knowledge and expertise, resources and contacts.”
Younger visitors to the Ashington centre can enjoy Hallowe’en tricks and treats from Saturday to Sunday, November 4.
There will be a pumpkin lantern trail and the chance to make a Hallowe’en mask and on Sunday artist Daniel Weatheritt will host a Big Draw drop-in art session.
He previously worked with young people across the county on the Time Vault exhibition.
On Wednesday, birds of prey displays will take place and the Woodhorn Narrow Gauge Railway will run.
