IT’S fright night in Meldon as a headless horseman and infamous witch come out for Halloween.

The grisly goings on will take place in the woods around Meldon Park in a fun-filled evening of tricks and treats hosted by the Kitchen Garden.

Visitors are invited to hunt for ghosts in a spooky walk through the woods and fields.

The woods will be lit by tealights, while well-known Northumberland storyteller Jim Grant relates the tale of the area’s own witch, Meg O’Meldon.

Meg lived in the village in the 1600s and is said to haunt the historic estate, searching for her hidden stash of loot.

A headless horseman is also on the loose and, if that is not enough, Melody the Dragon, made from stones and mounds of earth, will be putting in an appearance in the Meldon Park gardens.

There will also be a face-painter, bonfire and local ale on sale from Wylam Brewery.

Meldon Park owner James Cookson said: “We hope we will be welcoming wizards, witches, cats and bats as walkers can either dress up or come as they are. They can bring a pumpkin, lantern or torch to light the way and get ready for a few scary moments.

“The event is perfect for children, but it will also be great fun for adults as it is suitable for all ages.

“You never know what might happen on a mystical spooky night like Halloween, but it will probably be as scary as Scooby-Doo.

“It will be fantastic family fun and we’re expecting around 75 people on the night. If it is a success it is something we will do every Hallowe’en.

“The walk will go through the woods, which will be lit by tealights in jam jars, so it will be very spooky and atmospheric. We’ll stop in the woods for a while and have another story from Jim, who is a very entertaining and talented storyteller.”

The event takes place on Wednesday. Doors open at 4.30pm, with storytelling getting under way at 5pm and running until 7pm. Tickets cost £7.50 for adults and £5 for children, including a choice of a burger/sausage or vegetable soup, and a glass of juice for children.
