A ROSE by any name may smell sweet, but coming up with a winning title could be heaven scent for Morpeth gardeners.

Heighley Gate Nursery and Garden Centre is inviting customers to name a new rose in a national competition.

The winner will receive two tickets to the Royal Horticultural Society’s Hampton Court Flower Show next year, where the bloom will be unveiled, as well as pick up a rose of their own.

The contest is open to shoppers at all outlets in The Garden Centre Group and once named the rose will be sold throughout the company.

Heighley Gate General Manager Roger Wale said: “We have been given this wonderful opportunity by our supplier John Woods Nurseries.

“Rather than select a name ourselves, we wanted to give our customers the chance to be involved.

“Anyone who visits us will be able to collect an entry form for the national competition, which also coincides with our Rose Festival. To enter all you have to do is fill in the form.”

Forms can be collected from the garden centre, which is situated off the A697 north of Morpeth, and entries should be posted into a special box in the store by 4.30pm on Sunday, July 31. The Heighley Gate Rose Festival runs until Sunday.
