History lovers dig into the past

HISTORY lovers can take advantage of a behind-the-scenes tour of Northumberland Archives.

The archives, which are based at Woodhorn Museum near Ashington, will be open to the public on Saturday.

And those attending the open day will also be offered an introduction to using the archives to research their family history or other interests.

There will also be access to the digital suite, tours of the strongrooms and the chance to ask advice of archive professionals.

During the school holidays, Woodhorn is open seven days a week, including its permanent and temporary exhibitions, such as the Pitman Painters’ collection, the interactive Coal Town and Invasion, which features props and costumes from science-fiction film and TV favourites like Doctor Who, Star Wars and Aliens.

A narrow gauge railway operates most days and afternoon craft sessions will be available for children to make their own felt decorations, at a cost of £1.50 per piece.

Entry to the museum is free, parking costs £3 for a full day and admission charges apply to Invasion.
