THE President Mrs Anne Parsons welcomed guests and members to the 61st birthday celebration of the Inner Wheel, held at the Rugby Club.
Among the guests were the Mayor of Morpeth Coun Ken Brown, the Chairman of Inner Wheel District 3 Mrs Janet Proud, the President of Morpeth Rotary Mr Jeff Reynalds and representatives of other organisations in the town.
After the lighting of the friendship candles by Mrs Dylys Sanderson, a club member, we were entertained by harpist Janet Bennett.
Making a welcome return to entertain us, Janet transported us through her music to all parts of the British Isles. We listened to many familiar, well loved and beautiful tunes on this superb instrument and sometimes to her voice too. Janet, who is harpist to the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, was appropriately thanked by Mrs June Hudspith.
The District Chairman Mrs Janet Proud brought greetings from District 3. She commended members of Morpeth club who knit and sewed to make garments for those less fortunate abroad, the premature baby unit at Ashington, the Samaritans Purse and other causes. She was presented with a cheque for her charity the Bubble Foundation.
The Mayor Coun Ken Brown then brought greetings from the town. In almost his last engagement in his second year of office, Coun Brown, who had already spoken to the club about his time as Mayor, said how he had gained an insight into many organisations and how he had enjoyed visiting many.
Afternoon tea followed amid much chatter and reminiscing. Mrs Evelyn Hudson gave a sparkling vote of thanks on behalf of the guests.
President Anne, in her closing remarks, said the fact that she had become President for the second time after 10 years had given her her theme for the year, Recycling.
Morpeth club had once again enjoyed a birthday celebration in fine weather among friends.
