New leaflet to showcase Morpeth’s 2013 events

MORPETH organisations are being invited to help out an important document that will showcase what the town has to offer this year.

The Town Team, set up in the wake of the Portas bid to help promote the area as a shopping and visitor destination, is planning to publish a leaflet with details of the events taking place during the rest of 2013.

Those already on the list are the duathlon around the town at the start of April, Morpeth’s Northumbrian Gathering, the annual Fair Day, the centennial of the death of local suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, Picnic in the Park, Heritage Open Days and the switch-on of the Christmas Lights.

Now the group is asking businesses, community organisations and individuals with big events planned to get in touch with their details.

The Town Team is made up of representatives from Morpeth Town Council, the Greater Morpeth Development Trust, Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade and Sanderson Arcade among others.

It was unsuccessful in the first stage of the Portas scheme because the judges decided that other town centres were in a worse state so they were in greater need of the money.

But the project was then extended and Morpeth received £10,000 to help fund some initiatives after enlisting the support of Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery.

Chairman David Lodge (GMDT’s Chief Executive) said: “We see this new leaflet as an important part of marketing the town and we want it to be as inclusive as possible.”

Those planning events that could be included can send details to Laura Robinson at GMDT by emailing laura.robinson@gmdt.org

The deadline is Thursday, February 28.
