Sales Gathering pace for concert fund-raiser

TICKETS are selling out fast for Morpeth’s annual Northumbrian Concert.

The event is a key fund-raiser and foretaste for the Morpeth Northumbrian Gathering in April, which celebrates the county’s traditions.

This year’s concert highlights women in the county, which ties in with the Gathering’s theme of Emily Davison and the Suffragettes, and the role of women in general.

And the concert takes place on International Women’s Day next week.

The line-up includes leading women’s choir Werca’s Folk, led by Sandra Kerr, clog dancer Anne Walton and viola player and cellist Rachael Hales, who will be accompanied by Simon Haworth.

Singer and musician Kim Bibby-Wilson will appear with the rest of the Border Directors band, poet Peter Athey will recite in the Northumbrian dialect, while Ernie Gordon will show the versatility of the solo mouthorgan. His playing partner Anita James cannot take part, but the pair will team up for the Gathering weekend itself to run beginners’ mouthie workshops.

The concert also features talented singer, whistler and smallpiper Tristan Selden, who attends King Edward VI School, and Alex Swailes MBE as MC.

The event is a vital part of fund-raising for the Gathering to ensure the full programme of activities can take place. Anyone wishing to become a patron receives ticket discounts for the main festival, and sponsors are being sought for individual activities, such as workshops, competitions and street performances.

The Northumbrian Concert will take place at Morpeth Town Hall on Friday, March 8, at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £8.50, £7.50 concessions, and are available from Morpeth Chantry TIC on 01670 623455.

For sponsorship opportunities contact Kim Bibby-Wilson on 01670 513308.

The Gathering festival runs from April 5 to April 7 and as well as the women theme, there will be special events to celebrate the Lindisfarne Gospels visiting the region.

The programme is available online at www.northumbriana.org.uk and leaflets will soon be available from libraries and Tourist Information Centres.
