A WHEELY big surprise was in store for a Stannington five-year-old who took part in the Northumberland Summer Reading Challenge.

Lottie Belton, a member of Morpeth Library, became the proud owner of a new bicycle after her name was pulled out of the hat in a prize draw.

Northumberland County Council’s libraries take part in the national initiative every year. It is co-ordinated by the Reading Agency.

Lottie, who has been learning to ride a bike over the last few months, said: “I can’t believe I am the winner.

“I am really lucky that my name was picked out and I am going to look after my new bicycle really well.”

The challenge is designed to help children develop a love of reading and youngsters aged from four to 11 are encouraged to read six or more books over the summer.

They receive incentives along the way and then a medal and certificate when they complete the challenge. All those who finish it, which was more than 2,000 this year, are also entered into the prize draw.

Lottie was presented with her new pink and white bike by Northumberland County Council Executive Member for Libraries Neil Bradbury.

He said: “It was a pleasure to be able to present Lottie with the bicycle. She was absolutely thrilled and I am sure she will have many hours of fun on it.”
