Snapper Ben keeps his focus
A TRIO of Ponteland teenagers have shown a talent for photography by making the shortlist of a national contest.
Young snappers Jacob Davies, Ben Eggleston and Jamie Yates, who all attend Ponteland High School, were invited to the Museum of London after being selected for the final stage of the Colliers Green Focus Mobile Competition.
And Ben was named one of the runners-up in the contest.
He impressed the judges with his landscape image of Longsands in Tynemouth and his prize was a state-of-the-art Canon compact camera.
Jamie took a photograph of the school tennis courts from a nearby bin. He opened the lid and positioned his mobile phone inside at the top end peering out. Jacob’s entry was a landscape shot in the Lake District.
The Year 10 pupils were given a guided tour of the museum and took part in an afternoon of activities before the ceremony took place.
Ben said: “I was very pleased to receive my prize of a digital camera as a runner-up given that the standard of entries in the competition was very strong. I thought my picture of Tynemouth’s Longsands was very good, but the other entries were equally so. I enjoyed my trip to the museum and day out in London.”
The Colliers Green Focus project has been developed as part of the Key Stage 3 Geography curriculum.
Using photography as a creative medium, students focus on a particular location through the lens of a camera and explore issues of environmental change and sustainability.
Geography teacher Phil Ross and a colleague attended an instruction session at Northumbria University so they could give students advice about how to take an interesting photograph that met the judges’ requirements. The best ten from the school were then sent off to Colliers Green.
“The images were of a very good standard and to get three students on the final shortlist was a fantastic achievement,” said Mr Ross.
“The pupils took on board what we told them about photography techniques, including how to give their picture a sense of place. We’re thrilled that Ben was a runner-up, his photo was very eye-catching and featured some lovely contrasting colours.”
