Spirited show by St George’s Players

THERE was plenty of spirit in the latest production by St George’s Community Players last week.

Certainly on Saturday night – the last of three performances – their autumn offering That’s the Spirit, directed and written by local playwright Eileen Clark, left the audience gripped by the intensity and there was a spine-chilling moment just before the final curtain call when Peggy, a maid played by Heather Robinson, walked on stage.

The players – on top form yet again – required only two prompts on the night, with the excellent Emily Foster (Ilona Hilton), her sister Harriet Foster (Wendy Bradley) and their brother Bertie Foster (Jared Johnson) three central characters who were rarely off stage.

Indeed, as the synopsis revealed beforehand, Bertie did indeed dig up more than he bargained for when attempting to find a leaking pipe in the cellar, which escalated into strange happenings at the Foster’s dilapidated home.

Having an ulterior motive in the proposed sale of the house other than his occupation as a council official, Selwyn Jones was superbly acted by David Kiely, with Miss Pendergast (Margaret Johnson), Rev Timms (Harry Adamson), Alice (Carmel Adamson) and Ruby (Lara Hilton) playing supporting roles.

Another imaginative and realistic stage set constructed by Chris Johnson and his team, with lighting and sound by Peter Ozers.

Janet Colonel and Bridget Rowbottom were responsible for props, with Brenda Joy as prompt.

All in all, a spirited production.
