THE baa-rmy army is returning to Whalton Village Show.

Following the successful introduction of sheep racing last year, the event is being held again on Saturday along with many other attractions.

Four sheep will race in the four qualifying races, with the winners going through to the final.

With sponsorship support from Handelsbanken in Morpeth’s Sanderson Arcade and pubs the Beresford Arms in Whalton, Dyke Neuk in Meldon, The Wagon in Belsay and The Ridley Arms in Stannington, the 2011 event has a bigger track.

Show Chairman Martin Keegan said: “All the sheep owners were mad keen to come back and by having a longer track, more people will have a good view of the action.

“Now that we have highly-trained sheep plus determined, and now experienced, trainers, a great day out at the races is assured.”

New entertainment for this year will be provided by human statue Victoria Armstrong, Chris Cross the contortionist and Morris dancers.

Returning attractions include Bird of Prey exhibits, a display of classic cars, Northumbrian Pipers, a climbing wall, Scarecrow competition, a dog show, archery practice, a steam engine and an art show by Whalton First School.

There will also be a marquee with farmers stalls, crafts and produce and traditional competitions will be held in the village hall.

“With these events the weather is very important, but if it’s all right then we are confident of a good attendance because in these times of economic doom and gloom a village show offers a fun day out for families that is not too expensive,” said Mr Keegan.

“Some of the classic cars, at the moment we’re looking at around 10 to 12, will be for sale so people coming along could be driving away in one of them.”

The show will take place between 11am and 5pm.

Entry is £4 for adults and £2 for children.
