THE club welcomed judge Anne Swearman of Whitley Bay Photographic Society, who accepted the challenge of judging the Annual Digital Landscape Competition, on Tuesday, November 20.
Nineteen members had submitted 57 entries and she had the difficult task of viewing and commenting on each image.
The criteria for this landscape contest was to contain atmosphere, light, colour and drama in scenes which could include seascapes, as well as urban and industrial landscapes.
With years of experience as a photographer and a respected judge, Mrs Swearman gave constructive comments, including advice on how certain images could benefit from an alternative viewpoint and cropping.
Among the scenes entered were locations by the Colorado River and in Coquet Valley, Borrowdale, Suffolk, New Zealand and mountain ranges.
Highly-commended places were awarded to Chris Hills for Break in the Clouds, Dave Illingworth with his Edinburgh from the Park photo, Mark Harrison for Stormy Beach, John Thompson’s Land and Sea and Sky image and Lionel Bryan with Sablet.
Vince Rooker was in fifth place with Howtown Boat, fourth went to John Thompson for Bass Rock and Steve McDonald received third and second positions for Winters Gibbet and Alnmouth respectively.
The judge confirmed that the high standard of work submitted had caused some problems while selecting her top five and announced the winner of the Bates Cup for the best landscape image to be South Pier Sunrise, an atmospheric shot taken at Blyth by Ian Cadwallender.
The evening concluded with Club Chairman Dave Illingworth, who thanked Mrs Swearman for judging the competition.
l In September, the Newcastle Building Society launched a photography competition asking the people of Morpeth to enter images that captured the essence of the town.
Leaflets were distributed to residents, shops and local groups in the area and two Morpeth Camera Club members took up the challenge and have been successful.
First place went to Davy Bolam, who won £100, and his winning image Boats on the Wansbeck is featured on the cover of the Newcastle Building Society Calendar for 2013.
He had five other pictures showing different aspects of the town selected and fellow club member John Barnes had two winter photos of Morpeth selected.
All the images feature in the charity calendar, which is on sale at the Morpeth branch of Newcastle Building Society in Bridge Street.
Priced at £3, all proceeds will go to Barnabas Safe and Sound. It supports young people in Northumberland by preventing homelessness and promoting independence, skills and knowledge.
