The fragrances that mark the true arrival of autumn are a mixed bag in this garden. Flowers of viburnum Dawn are opening and sweet-smelling as we approach to admire the leaf colour change.

Cercidiphyllum foliage is changing and there’s a hint of burnt sugar as we approach to examine it.

And somewhere deep in the foliage that lines a driveway, there is something short-lived and far from fragrant that speaks of decay and autumn – the stinkhorn fungus!
