Tips to help your growing

GARDENERS can get expert advice on how to get the most from their plots this spring at a Northumberland garden centre event.

Heighley Gate Nursery and Garden Centre near Morpeth will be offering free tips and advice during its Spring Gardening Celebration, which runs until Sunday, April 29.

It is hoped that people of all ages who do not consider themselves to be gardeners will become more involved with looking after plants, flowers and greenery.

Children will be able to collect free cress seeds, while stocks last, to take home and grow. They can also pick up a free activity sheet on how to grow cress in all varieties of containers, including yoghurt pots.

General Manager Roger Wale said: “Staff will be on hand to give visitors complimentary advice on looking after their gardens this spring and experts will also be available on selected days during the fortnight to host talks on herbaceous borders.”

Photographers can get involved too as a competition is running as part of the celebration.

Residents are invited to submit a printed copy of a picture they have taken on camera of their favourite spring scene. Write your name, address and contact number on the back and complete an entry form, which is available at the garden centre.

The closing date for entries is this Sunday. The winner will be awarded a £50 gift voucher. For more information about the event, telephone 01670 513416.
