Vegetables doing nicely despite dry start

Globe artichoke.
Globe artichoke.

Our vegetable crops are generally beginning to harvest nicely but given the dry opening to the season, potatoes and all would have struggled on this medium to light soil without the organic matter.

Most of them were grown in pots under glass and had a flying start.

The shallots certainly benefitted from this and are big enough now to lift and store. Just as well because one or two are already bolting to seed.

Some of the globe artichokes are just about to break bud and flower.

They’re growing in a mixed border and attract big bumblebees. But they’re a vegetable as well, so a last taste is on the cards before all the buds disappear!
