Victorian kitchen garden opens after TV make-over
A VICTORIAN kitchen garden and cafe will open this weekend following a TV make-over.
The Kitchen Garden at Meldon Park near Morpeth has undergone a major transformation by Channel 4’s Country House Rescue, with the programme due to be aired this summer.
But visitors can see the results for themselves when the business opens on Saturday.
It will offer a range of family events to mark the relaunch, including children’s storytelling sessions, face painting, pot-a-plant activities and tours of the garden and park, as well as a competition to name a slumbering dragon to be unearthed by sculptor David Edwick.
Mr Edwick will also give stone carving demonstrations and unveil his stunning Meldon Lily, a bud made from natural limestone.
Local produce will take centre stage, with the cafe serving dishes created by the estate’s homegrown ingredients and tastings and workshops by Wylam Brewery, Northumbrian Cheese Co, Localicious and Castle Bakery.
With support from Taste North East, the garden will act as a centre for local producers to showcase their wares throughout the year, with seasonal tastings and events.
Mother-of-three Emily Cookson, who set up the venture, said: “The Kitchen Garden is the heart of the estate and is an amazing attraction which can be enjoyed by people of all ages.”
