NEWCASTLE United are understood to have made checks on Rosenborg playmaker Per Ciljan Skjelbred, who turned down a junior contract with Liverpool after winning a competition on Norwegian TV.
The promising 21-year-old Skjelbred is interesting a series of potential buyers, although his advisor Andreas Ekker insists there has as yet been no contact with the Tyneside club.

Ekker said: "All the clubs from the big leagues have been watching him.

"So far what I can say is that nobody from Newcastle has come to me. There has been no contact in that way yet.

"He is very ambitious, and if Newcastle came to us with an offer, then we would have to seriously consider it.

"We would look at the total package they would offer us, including how the coach would use him.

"We know there are several clubs interested that have watched him at both club and international level, but nobody has come in with a concrete bid."

Skjelbred has one cap for Norway after making 35 appearances for Rosenborg, scoring three goals in the process.

Skjelbred started his career in local football with Trygg/Lade.

He made an impression and was selected to compete in a football talent competition entitled on Norwegian TV3.

He won this and the first prize of a week's training with Liverpool, where he was offered a junior contract which he declined.
