NEWCASTLE United youngster Andy Carroll has been pulled from the England Under-19 squad for the forthcoming European Championships.
The Gateshead-born striker suffered a heel injury while with England in preparation for the tournament in the Czech Republic.
Carroll will now link up with the United squad when they assemble for pre-season training on Monday.
He is expected to undergo a scan to assess the extent of the problem once he is back in the Magpies fold.
The injury is a blow to his club as well as the player's international ambitions.
While manager Kevin Keegan expected Carroll to miss the early part of the pre-season programme, he could now face a longer spell without the promising player.
United look likely to go into their opening friendly game against Hartlepool United at Victoria Park on July 19 with only Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins and Alan Smith as his strikeforce.
Mark Viduka's Achilles injury is expected to keep him out for most if not the whole pre-season programme.
Although one unexpected addition to the pre-season squad could be Shola Ameobi, who is still to find a new club after being linked with moves to Norwich City, Ipswich Town, West Brom and Hull City.
