United beat Premier League rivals to top-rated teenager

NEWCASTLE United are reported to have pulled off a major coup by winning the race to sign Plymouth Argyle youngster Aaron Spear ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal, Everton and Portsmouth.
According to Skysports.com Spear, one of the most sought-after young players in the country, has agreed to join the Magpies' youth set-up, with only a fee between the two clubs to be settled.

Newcastle executive director of football Dennis Wise has been in talks with the youngster after a series of impressive in Plymouth's youth teams.

United appear to have beaten the challenge of several Premier League rivals for the player, including Arsenal, Portsmouth and Everton.

But the 15-year-old is said to be moving to Tyneside.

The youngster's mum, Caroline Spear, confirmed the highly-rated youngster has agreed to join the St James's Park club after being impressed by what they had to offer.

"Aaron has agreed to join Newcastle and now we are waiting on the two clubs to agree a fee," she told skysports.com.

"We spent a couple of days up in Newcastle and met with Dennis Wise and we were very impressed by what he had to offer.

"A number of clubs had expressed an interest in Aaron, but he has decided he wants to go to Newcastle.

"We are very proud of him and we are excited about his future at Newcastle."
