THE leader of the council used his closing speech during Tuesday’s meeting to pledge to clear the backlog of potholes in the county.

Coun Grant Davey told councillors that an extra £600,000 was to be put towards repairing roads in Northumberland to get rid of more than 12,000 potholes by June this year, with more than 20,000 having already been filled in.

“We have been determined to tackle the damage caused to our road network by severe weather over recent years,” he said.

“This commitment of this administration to reducing the number of potholes should be welcomed by everyone who use the roads.”
