MORPETH has received high praise for its Bloom efforts during the last three years.
The town has represented the Northumbria section, which covers most of the North East of England, in the Britain in Bloom competition between 2007 and 2009.
It received silver gilt awards, the second best available, on all three occasions in the Be
st Town category.
Each time it came after achieving a gold medal and the Best Town accolade in the Northumbria in Bloom contest.
Although there was disappointment among the Morpeth contingent that it did not receive the top honour in the national event, Northumbria in Bloom Chairman Eileen Burn said it should be very proud of its efforts.
She told members of Morpeth Town Council: “What a fantastic job Morpeth has done.
“You are great ambassadors for Northumbria and I feel sorry that you did not get a deserved gold award for Britain in Bloom.”
The town has not been put forward for Britain in Bloom in 2010, but Mrs Burn said this was only to give it a break from the massive efforts required to put an entry together.
“We felt that it would not be fair to ask Morpeth to do it again next year, as entering the national competition requires extra funds and resources,” she said.
“It can now take a breather and I’m sure those involved will come back re-invigorated to have another go at Britain in Bloom in the future.”
The entries have been funded by Morpeth Town Council and the Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade and involved schools, businesses and organisations across the town.
Service teams from the former Castle Morpeth Council and Northumberland County Council have also played a major part by preparing Carlisle Park, providing some floral displays, sweeping streets and cutting grass, among other activities.
