VITAL works to Morpeth's landmark Chantry are expected to be carried out this Autumn.
Castle Morpeth Council has set aside funds for security and electrical jobs, as well as work to ensure the Grade I Listed building is Disability Discrimination Act compliant.
A project team has now been established to steer the programme and contracts are set to be awarded.
The Council's Executive Board has also instructed officers to apply for Listed Building Consent for the works.
Executive member Nic Best said: "This year's funding provides for work to the Chantry and we are hoping to have a planning application in before the June development control meeting."
It is hoped that work will begin in the Autumn.
