Northumberland students were today celebrating their achievements at GCSE as the County gained its best ever pass rate of students gaining 5A*-C

The number of students gaining this rose ten percentage points to 71 percent. When English and Maths are also included there was a fivepercentage points rise to 51 percent.

Several schools have made very significant improvements since 2007 and there are now no schools in the county below the Government's floor target of 30 percent 5A*-C including English and Maths.

Coun Simon Reed, Executive Member for Children's Services said: "The Local Authority has worked hard to support its schools and we are delighted to see such a significant improvement this year.

"We know from OFSTED inspections of schools that the quality of education in Northumberland is of a high standard.

"These results show that the dedication of those who work in schools is crucial in helping students to achieve so well.

"We send our congratulations to all students today, whatever they achieved, and wish them well in the next stage of their careers.

Coun Jeff Reid, Leader of Northumberland County Council said: "I am delighted with the continuing success of Northumberland Schools.

"I would like to give my warmest congratulations to the young people on their success; as well as to all those who have worked with them."
