THREE Castle Morpeth schools are giving creative children the chance to display their skills in a range of activities this week as part of a national scheme.
Ponteland Middle School, Morpeth King Edward VI School and Collingwood School and Media Arts College in Stobhillgate, Morpeth, have signed up to the first ever Shine week.
One of the many aims of Shine is to highlight the fact that talent is a bro
ad definition and covers many different skills, so each school has a varied programme.
Activities at Collingwood include orienteering, kickboxing, cooking and circus skills, while KEVI is having an Open Day today (Thursday) lead by Year 12 students, who will show guests the achievements of pupils across all subject areas and the work of after school clubs such as the KEVI Gnomes and KEVI Radio.
The High School is also running a theatre workshop with West End star Dawn Hope, where students involved will perform a short sketch at the end of it.
At Ponteland Middle School, its Eco Team are coming up with plans for a green classroom and are also preparing plants for the Northumbria in Bloom competition, pupils will create artistic versions of the school's logo and sports leaders will help to organise events for sports days at Darras Hall and Ponteland First schools.
Vicki Alder, Administrator at Collingwood, said: "These activities will raise the children's self esteem, give them a sense of well-being and show them that there are other ways, as well as academic achievements, they can shine."
The festival forms part of the Government's campaign to unlock talent in young people and stories, pictures and videos from the week will be uploaded onto its website — www.shineweek.co.uk — for public viewing.
