THERE was an excellent turnout at an event to celebrate 50 years of Stobhill Youth Club.
Among those who attended were former members who joined at the start of the organisation, when it was called the Morpeth Police Boys' Club, Michael Waugh, the O'Brien brothers, Jimmy Brown and Frankie Kay.
MP for Wansbeck Denis Murphy, Castle Morpeth Mayor and Mayoress, Coun and Mrs Milburn Douglas, fellow Borough councillors Kay and John Morris and Morpeth Town councillor Derek Thompson also came to look at past photographs, newspaper cuttings and artefacts. There was also a performance from the Showtime Dance Group.
One of the organisers, Peter Farrier, said: "It was a great day to reminisce about the old days of the Club and it was fantastic to see so many former members turn up and there was a lot of interest shown from the wider community, including some of the new estates in the area."
He praised Lynda Martin, the daughter of one of the Club's founders — former policeman Les Caton — for giving permission for old photographs to be used for the event. Mr Farrier also thanked the Northumbria Probation Community Service and Youth Offending Service for helping to prepare the event at the Ninth Avenue premises, Graham Johnson Morpeth Design and Print for work to publicise it and voluntary youth workers Jackie Anderson and Dave Hedley for their efforts on the day.
