Residents who are concerned about children playing truant from school are able to contact 101 to report the issue.
Many people don't realise they can call 101 to report young people out of school when they perhaps shouldn't be — particularly if it is a regular problem.
Peter Coates, Northumbria 101 Operations Manager, said: "Residents who have concerns about y
oung people who may be playing truant from school can call and advisers will send information to the education department of the relevant local council. The adviser will need as much detail as possible, such as a description of their school uniform, estimated age, why the caller thinks they may be playing truant and more information if they have it, including if they see them regularly or if they are involved in any disorder.
"Each council may respond slightly differently but in most cases an education welfare officer will respond by liaising with the school based on the information provided. They may not necessarily need to contact the caller again but may want to talk to them about their experience regarding the truants.
"Councils believe that truancy is not only unacceptable and harms a child's chances to have a successful life after school, but it also creates opportunities to become involved in anti-social behaviour. Councils work with Northumbria Police and will involve them if there is evidence of a crime or threat to public safety."
