Morpeth athlete Jim Alder will be joining in a special event held at County Hall this weekend to celebrate the moment the UK becomes the host nation to the 2012 Olympics.

Alder, winner of the gold medal for the marathon at the 1966 Commonwealth Games, will be joining County Council officials at their flag-hoisting event to be held on Sunday between 3.30-4.30pm.

The London Olympic Handover Flag will be raised across the nation in unprecedented gesture to commemorate Handover day.

Coun Ian Tompkins, Chairman of the County Council, is hosting the County Hall event.

He said: "This is the beginning of an exciting four years for the capital, and the country.

"There will be unprecedented investment in sporting excellence nationally, and we are ready to seize any opportunities to continue our work promoting sport and healthier lifestyles in Northumberland."

More than 400 venues will be holding similar events across the country.
