MORPETH volunteers made a grand gesture when they boosted the proceeds of an annual collection.
Members of Morpeth Lions Club have long offered their assistance for the town's Northumberland Gathering and help out with a street collection.

Officially the proceeds should be split between the group and the Gathering Committee, but traditionally the Lions have handed over their share in recognition of the event's community value.

This year, however, they went one better and awarded an extra £250 to make £1,000.

The gesture comes as welcome relief for Gathering organisers after a major source of funding failed to materialise this year, forcing a review of future activities.

Presenting the cheque to Gathering Committee Chairman Kim Bibby-Wilson, Lion President Mike Nicholson said: "Each year we are in an ideal position to see the pleasure given to all those who witness the Gathering Procession and enactments.

"Morpeth Lions appreciate all the effort you put in to ensure a successful weekend and were sorry to hear of the funding setback.

"We therefore have pleasure in presenting you with a cheque for £1,000, bringing an extra £250 above the collection total. We hope it may make a small difference and provide you with some encouragement."

Mrs Bibby-Wilson said: "This really is a grand donation."
