NORTHUMBERLAND County Council libraries are getting set to welcome children into a fantastical adventure to keep them wanting to read throughout the holidays.
The Summer Reading Challenge will be launched with a 'dragons' theme on Saturday at Morpeth Library from 10.30am until 11.30 am.
Local fantasy author Stephen Finlay will be on hand to undertake a story workshop for children aged ten and over. There will also be a name the dragon competition and treasure hunt for younger children aged five to ten.
The Summer Reading Challenge, now in its 11th year encourages children to read six library books during the Summer holidays and this year has the 'fantasy' name Quest Seekers and is aimed at four to 11-yearolds.
The adventure will start in some local libraries, where quest seekers meet Cadmus, the gatekeeper who will challenge them to bring back a golden book. There are three stages to their quest: Firebird Rising, Mountain Mission and Dragon's Lair. Each seeker will be given a special pack and incentives to collect as they read.
One successful seeker will have the chance to win a new Nintendo DSi and for two runners-up to receive gift cards worth £30 to spend at a games shop.
A range of incentives to spur children on to complete their mission — from dragon making to treasure hunts and storytelling are being organised in selected libraries.
