NEW gates will be added to a private lane in a bid to keep out boy racers.
The action will be taken by residents of Woodside Cottage, Whorral Bank, to try to deter young drivers from gathering outside their home.

Planning officers initially advised councillors to reject the scheme as the 1.2-metre gates would cause unacceptable difficulties for people accessing the nearby sports field, river bank, an approved caravan park and Ford House.

However, the recommendation was changed when the applicant agreed to keep the gates unlocked.

Concerns had been raised that even unlocked gates would cause problems in getting caravans through as they would reduce the width of the lane from five-metres to 3.5.

However, the Borough's Development Services Committee was told that one-metre high barriers could be erected without permission.

Members decided by six votes to one, with one abstention, to allow the application, subject to the gates being kept open between 7am and 8pm and unlocked at all times.
