A PONTELAND band is set for the big time after winning a televised national competition.
Members of Luxon Bute, who performed 'Beware of the Donkey' at Fairfield Hall in London in the 'Live and Unsigned' final broadcast on Sky's Red TV channel, were crowned the best unsigned under-18 act in England.
The band received the most text votes and the best score from the judges, including DJ Mark Goodyear and Corrine Bailey Rae's producer.
As well as winning a trophy, the teen six-piece has earned time in a Southampton studio to produce a first album later this year.
Lead singer Josh Taylor, 16, said: "It was a fantastic feeling when we were announced the winners.
"After hearing all the acts, I thought we could come third but there were two bands I thought would definitely beat us. However, it soon dawned on me that there was a chance we could win and we're thrilled that the public and judges saw something in us."
The melodic rockers were formed three years ago, initially as a cover band out to have fun. After a break they re-formed at the end of 2006 and as they had recording equipment they decided to make a proper go of it.
Since then they have played both locally and at the Head of Steam in Newcastle to build up a fan base.
The band also expanded and after some tinkering the current line-up, which also includes Dan Smithson, electric guitar, Alex May, bass guitar, Kevin Wang, acoustic guitar, Adam Heardman, drums, and Charles Harrison, piano, was settled before the regional finals at the Tyne Theatre in April.
Now the competition and their GCSE's are over, they are aiming to build on their success in the region.
"We hope to use this win as a springboard and we are currently phoning lots of people and venues in the North East to try to get our name about," said Josh.
