SOME quick thinking has helped a Morpeth childcare club make the right grade for disabled youngsters.
Dawn to Dusk, next to All Saints First School in Lancaster Park, had a long-standing problem that its mobile building could only be accessed by steps, which put off some people from attending the club.

But its fortunes changed after Helen Coulthard, who works for Northumberland County Council's Disabled Children's Access to Childcare (DCATCH) scheme, spotted the temporary ramp outside the former Marks & Spencer store in Morpeth Market Place.

She said: "In my first meeting with Dawn to Dusk I was told that the main thing they were looking for was a ramp to greatly improve access for disabled children.

"Then one day I saw the ramp at M&S and knew the store was moving to the new Sanderson Arcade so I made enquiries and found out it was put up by construction company Mansell.

"I was delighted when it agreed to re-build it at the club, especially as it brought up joiners from a project in Grimsby to carry the work out.

"This ramp increases the choice for parents with disabled children looking for childcare, as some of them told me they were impressed with the facilities Dawn to Dusk has but could not consider it because of access issues."

The club offers a range of activities for children aged between two and 14.

It has an outdoor area and uses sensory equipment provided by DCATCH.

Manager Kathryn Riches said: "We are over the moon with this ramp. To have this new facility makes things much easier for us and the children who use it."

Mansell Regional Managing Director Bill Aitchison, said: "As the ramp would be of great use to the club, we were more than happy to re-build it there."
