THE fashion stakes have stepped up a gear in Pegswood as youngsters drive home the road safety message.

Pupils at Pegswood First School turned to their creative side in a competition to design 20mph speed signs.

Nine entries were chosen to be made into signs for display around the village and the children can warn drivers on another front by wearing their signs in the street.

For School Travel Plan officials at Northumberland County Council were so pleased with the youngsters' efforts that they provided t-shirts of the designs for each of the winners.

Deputy Head Andrew Waterfield said: "The pupils loved it.

"We had a look on the Internet to find existing signs and talked about why it was important to have 20mph restrictions and the impact it would have on road safety. Then the children did a couple of draft designs and put their best ones forward."

The competition was for pupils aged seven to nine.
