MEMBERS of Kirkley WI were given an illustrated talk on the history of squirrels in the British Isles.
The presentation was made by Mark Wilkinson, from the Save Our Squirrels group.
Members heard how red squirrels have colonised forests since the Ice Age and have been used in road safety campaigns and children's stories for generations.
Their a
ctivities and actions make them a pleasure to observe as they are able to adapt to a variety of habitats and eat a seasonal diet from the forests and hedgerows.
There are now a number of reserves with surrounding buffer zones in the North of England, so hopefully with the right support their future will be more secure.
In thanking the speaker, Judith Arthur commented on the love small children have for the red squirrel. She also won the competition for a squirrel artefact.
During the business meeting a presentation was made to the past president, Sally Milner.
A number of visitors were also welcomed.
The pending exchange visit from Ballywater WI has been cancelled, but members are looking forward to a busy Summer season with the car treasure hunt, sand sculpture competition, domino drive and walks.
And finally the carpet bowls team were congratulated on their efforts in recent competition.
