TOWN centre developers spelled out the case for a supermarket at Morpeth's Low Stanners today.
Tesco and Sainsbury want to build edge of town stores at Stobhill.

But developer Mark Dransfield says these schemes would threaten the success of the £23m revitalisation of the Back Riggs area which is currently under way.

Instead he wants to develop a supermarket on land which is currently occupied by the Northumberland County Council Highways depot.

His proposals were the subject of heated debate at an exhibition held at Riverside Leisure Centre this afternoon.

Among those who attended were residents of nearby Staithes Lane, people concerned about the environmental impact of development on the site close to the riverside, and others worried about the possibility of flooding.

In this video interview Mr Dransfield talks about the scheme and explains why he believes it is important that a new store should be built in the town centre of Morpeth rather than on the outskirts.
