IT was a shaggy dog tale with a happy ending as Morpeth firefighters staged an unusual rescue.
Winnie, a two-year-old black retriever, had a lucky escape after falling 22ft from the old Warkworth Bridge at about 9am on Monday.

The dog landed on a small island in the River Coquet and fire crews from Morpeth and Amble were scrambled to rescue the pet.

A local resident took the teams out to the island in his rowing boat and they managed to put Winnie onto a spinal board to transport back to dry land, where a vet from Morpeth's Robson & Prescott Veterinary Centre was at hand to give expert help.

Although suffering a broken paw and shock, Winnie is expected to make a full recovery from her ordeal.
