A musical double bill

FOR our last meeting before we have our summer break, we were, as usual, royally entertained by Mrs Eileen Brown, who shared her love of musicals and songs with us.

Her subject this time was Singing Duos.

She began with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, singing The Indian Love Call from Rose-Marie. We, I must admit, had difficulty reaching those high notes.

She then ranged from Oklahoma, (People Will Say We’re In Love), Show Boat, (It’s Only Make Believe), and High Society, (True Love).

These were followed by The Everly Brothers, singing All I Have To Do Is Dream, Peters and Lee, who won New Faces with Welcome Home, and two singers from Choppington, Millican and Nesbitt, who were Opportunity Knocks winners and also appeared on Top Of The Pops with their song Vaya Con Dios.

Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae sang Whispering Hope from their 1962 album, a song recorded by lots of artists, including Jim Reeves.

Eileen ended with one of her favourite pieces of music, which won a Radio 4 poll for listeners’ favourite duets, from the opera Lakme by Delibes.

Finally, our condolences to the family of our member Mrs Mary Ferguson. She was a lovely lady and will be very much missed.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, September 12, at 2pm, at St Roberts Church Hall. All welcome.
