MORPETH Lions Club was blessed with dry weather and kind hearts for its annual street collection in the town.

President Dave Wheeler said that members think the £800 total is a record for the club’s non-disaster collections.

“This will greatly assist us to cover the costs of our Christmas commitments,” he added. “These start with our ‘Meet the Lions’ event, which this year will take place at the Riverside Lodge on Sunday, November 20, when we look forward to welcoming up to 200 elderly or disabled residents of Morpeth for afternoon tea, entertainment and an early Christmas present.

“Next there is the provision of Christmas present sacks for over 50 children who would otherwise receive very little.

“Finally we provide, put together and deliver over 200 food parcels for elderly people and needy families in the Morpeth district.”

The amount was boosted by a donation of £15 from the Morpeth Area Partially Sighted group.
