A COUNTY beauty spot is looking even better after some air cadets showed that they also have skills on the ground.
The young people from 346 (Tynemouth) Squadron donated their time and energy to make repairs and improvements at Bolam Lake Country Park.
Their tasks included repairing the south footpath that runs the length of the lake, tackling Rhododendron bushes which have been blocking light to other plants and trees and altering the acidity of the soil.
The area has links with other air cadet squadrons. The 2344 (Longbenton) squadron recently joined forces with Northumberland Country Council to do some important works, which included cleaning streams and building trenches in order to conserve the woodland for visitors and wildlife.
This project was recently recognised as highly commended in the Best Young People’s project at the LOVE Northumberland Awards.
Council Executive Member for Infrastructure and the Environment Simon Reed said: “It’s great to see young people involved in improving Northumberland’s beautiful green spaces.”
