All fired up by food

A GROUP of young people fired up the oven as a support programme held a landmark event in Pegswood.

Real Food Works has been delivering sessions with the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) as part of the organisation’s scheme to help 16 to 25-year-olds not in employment, education or training.

And the company recently held its 1,000th session under the partnership at Pegswood Fire Station.

The young people prepared lunch for themselves and the fire service officers and they learned some top cooking and healthy eating tips.

The Fire and Rescue Service’s ‘Fired Up!’ programme covers training courses focusing on basic fire-fighting skills, interwoven with activities delivered by a range of partners designed to develop wider life skills.

These include healthy living (fitness, nutrition, drugs awareness and sexual health), employability, first aid, safe driving and financial inclusion.

Those taking part are also introduced to volunteering in their local community.

NFRS delivery manager Deborah Brown said: “We’ve been working with Real Food Works for the past four years and this has been a very successful collaboration.

“Feedback from the young people who have taken part in the sessions is very positive and the courses fit well with our ‘Fired Up!’ programme.”

Some of the courses lead to BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) accredited qualifications.
