The forecasting body released an amber warning for wind and rain to hit the county with a prediction of travel disruption throughout the weekend.

The warning states that 'outbreaks of rain will develop later on Friday, becoming persistent and heavy overnight and lasting through Saturday, before clearing southwards early on Sunday'.

It adds that people should 'be prepared for the likelihood of flooding affecting properties and parts of communities. Watercourses may become dangerous, deep and fast-flowing, while some transport disruption seems likely'.

The Chief Forecaster said: "A frontal zone will move into northern Britain later on Friday and become slow-moving for 24-36 hours, bringing a prolonged spell of heavy rain and strong winds.

"Rainfall totals of 60 to 100 mm are likely quite widely, with some prone mountainous areas seeing in excess of 150 mm over a 30 hour period, perhaps even very locally around 200 mm. Given saturated conditions and high river levels from recent rainfall, further flooding is likely. The warning will be kept under review, with possible further updates."
