A shoplifter was detained by security staff at Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth on Monday afternoon.
After two of the Beadles at the shopping centre took this action in the piazza area outside the Marks & Spencer store, pictured, police were contacted and the man was arrested.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Police were called to the Marks & Spencer store at Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth at 3.12pm on Monday following reports of a shoplifter having been detained by security staff.
“Officers attended and a man was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting.”
Paul Burt, 28, of Bamburgh Drive, Pegswood, was later charged with two counts of shoplifting. He pleaded guilty to both counts at Mid and South East Northumberland Magistrates Court yesterday.
He was ordered to pay compensation and prosecution costs – the total amount was £156.
A Sanderson Arcade spokeswoman praised the Beadles for ‘dealing with the incident in an appropriate manner’.
