Boundary proposals prompt concern

TOWN councillors have voiced their concern over proposed changes to Parliamentary constituencies.

Under new proposals by the Boundary Commission for England, Morpeth would be taken out of the Wansbeck area to form a new Berwick and Morpeth constituency.

Members of Morpeth Town Council’s Finance and General Purposes Committee said they had little argument with the change itself, and agreed to refrain from comment on areas outside their remit.

Coun Les Cassie said: “I propose that we write to the Boundary Commission saying we agree with the proposal to put Morpeth in the Berwick constituency and don’t comment on other proposals, which many people will be commenting on but are not in the remit of Morpeth Town Council to comment on.”

However, councillors will give an opinion on plans to move Rothbury from the Berwick constituency to Hexham due to its educational ties to the area.

Coun Nic Best said: “It may be relevant to talk about Rothbury given that it feeds into the high school in Morpeth.

“We should comment on that and say that we don’t think Rothbury should be taken out of Berwick.”

The committee agreed unanimously.
