Apprentice Conor shows he’s hot stuff

A FIRED-UP Northumberland apprentice has taken a top honour for his work.

Conor Reed, who works in Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, has won the North East EAL Award for Advanced Apprentice of the Year.

He was presented with the accolade at a high-profile ceremony at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Durham for the regional winners of the National Training Awards and National Apprenticeship Awards.

“I’m thrilled to have won the award,” he said.

“Since I joined Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service as an apprentice in 2011 I have put my heart and soul into my work and it’s great to know that not only my community has benefited from the work I’ve done, but that it has been recognised by a much wider audience.

“This award has inspired me to do even more. I am already promoting apprenticeships with Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service to young people in my local area and looking for ways to make more of a difference in my community.”

The honours are organised by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) to celebrate the achievements of organisations that deliver outstanding training programmes, apprentices and apprenticeship employers.

More than 1,500 entries were received.

Mr Reed will now progress to the national judging stage and the winners will be announced at the opening ceremony of the WorldSkills UK show in Birmingham in November.

Northumberland County Council was Highly Commended in the Macro Employer of the Year category.

NAS Divisional Area Director Sue Price said: “The North East final of the National Apprenticeship Awards and National Training Awards was a fantastic evening of celebration for apprentices and employers and I would like to congratulate all the talented winners and finalists who had such inspiring stories to tell.

“Apprenticeships and skills development bring so many benefits, allowing employers to tap into new raw talent, upskill their staff and grow their businesses, and all our finalists are testament to this.

“I would like to wish all our champions every success in winning a place in the national final.”
