Car park restrictions

SPACES at one of Morpeth’s public car parks will be unavailable for the next few weeks because of electricity works.

Barriers are in place at a proportion of the bays in the Dark Lane facility because Northern Powergrid needs to move some cables under the hard surface.

They are being diverted to a new electricity substation in Low Stanners as part of the new supermarket scheme. The spaces should be reinstated in the middle of next month, although there will be another blocking-off period later in the year when the car park is reconfigured as it needs to be linked with a new one. On Tuesday, a water pipe burst during the cable diversion works in Staithes Lane and there were concerns that it could enter local properties.

Project Manager Paul Consterdine from contractor Tolent Construction said: “The water did gush out so we put down some sandbags and channelled as much water as possible to our site to minimise the impact on residents.

“Fortunately, the type of land we’re working on meant it was drained fairly quickly.”
