Challenge puts shoppers in a spin for charity

VISITORS to a Morpeth shopping centre on Saturday can kick-start their 2013 fitness activities and help a good cause at the same time by contributing some pedal power.

Sanderson Arcade’s New Year – New You campaign gets off to a flying start with a 600-mile shoppers spin-a-thon challenge.

Five spinning bikes will be set up in the piazza area from 10am, with cyclists working in a relay to cover 600 miles over six hours – cycling the distance from the Arcade to the Olympic Park in London and back to Morpeth.

As well as launching the campaign, the event is aimed at raising money for the centre’s chosen charity for 2013: The Sick Children’s Trust.

Staff from the women’s only gym Energie will be heading the challenge along with Arcade workers and shoppers.

Health, fitness and nutrition advice will also be available on the day.

Centre manager Medi Parry said: “This is a great way to blow away the cobwebs and get the New Year started with a bit of a challenge.

“We hope our shoppers will come along and join in to help us. If we’re going to get to the Olympic Park and back in six hours, all five bikes will need to be going the whole time so we need lots of riders.”

A giant map of the UK will monitor progress throughout the challenge.
