Changes to booze sales accepted

CHANGES to a licensing application for a new Morpeth food store have been accepted by councillors.

Sainsbury’s had originally been seeking permission to sell alcohol from 6am to midnight in its shop that will soon open at the former Black Swan pub site in Shields Road, Stobhill.

This attracted objections from local residents and Morpeth Town Council. They said the hours would be excessive and could result in public disorder, and they should be similar to times accepted for businesses in a residential area.

The supermarket firm has now amended it application and is seeking permission to sell alcohol from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week.

At a meeting of the authority’s Planning and Transport Committee, Stobhill ward councillor Ian Lindley said it could ask Sainsbury’s to go back another hour to 10pm, but he agreed with fellow members that the change was a fair compromise.
