AN eye for fashionable footwear has enabled a Ponteland teenager’s idea to become a reality.

Cora McLeod has been announced as a winner of the Daniel Footwear Design a Shoe competition, taking first prize with her Cora’s Wave Wedge.

And as she was successful in the 12-16 age category out of thousands of submissions, her drawing of a stylish sandal that would also be comfortable will now be produced and sold in the company’s stores, as well as online.

It will be part of its Spring/Summer collection for 2013.

The 14-year-old, who attends Ponteland High School, said: “I am super pleased about winning the competition, it was an amazing feeling when I found out.

“It was a great experience to come up with the design and having it made and sold is a fantastic start to my future.”

The national competition was launched to encourage young, up-and-coming designers to invent and draw a shoe that would fit appropriately into Daniel Footwear’s collection.

Children were asked to use their imaginative flair. Another Ponteland High School student, Abby Blain, was one of the five shortlisted finalists in the 12-16 section.

Company owner Daniel Buck said: “We have been overwhelmed with the level of entries this time round and the talent among all young designers appears exceptionally good.

“However, Cora’s wedge design caught my attention as a sophisticated sandal with a twist.”
